The SAPI 87th Anniversary Luncheon at Paper Week was a Success with Former Mayor Koch as the Highlight

Almost 200 members of the Sales Association of the Paper Industry and their guests attended the 87th Anniversary Luncheon held during Paper Week at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City. The highlight of the event was Former Mayor Edward I. Koch who was the Luncheon speaker. In addition, SAPI chair Doc Maiorino introduced the incoming chair of the organization for 2006-07: Alfred F. Walden of Walden-Mott Corporation.

Former Mayor Ed Koch entertained the audience of sales executives and their customers with his usual wit and charm. His speech touched on three main areas: immigration, Iraq and the next presidential election.

Mr. Koch spoke on each of these topics with absolute conviction, determination and sometimes, anger. He confirmed that he will stand behind Hillary Clinton and believes she will be the Democratic nominee for the 2008 Presidential election. He expressed that the United States should get out of Iraq and that too many American lives have been lost and tens of thousands severely wounded. He also expressed his opinions on the immigration policy of the United States claiming our government is too lenient and should be stronger when it comes to protecting its borders—similar to what is done by other countries.

On a local topic, he mentioned New York City’s financial stability and gave Mayor Bloomberg kudos for a job well done.

After a few minutes of spirited Q&A, Mr. Koch stayed for photos with members.

After Mr. Koch’s speech, SAPI chair Doc Maiorino introduced the organization’s new chair for 2006-07: Alfred F. Walden of Walden-Corporation. Walden then presented Doc with a token of appreciation from the organization for a successful year.

Alfred Walden is following in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather who were both chairs of the Paper Club of New York – which is now part of SAPI.

A Q&A article with Alfred Walden will appear in the May/June issue of Paper & Packaging magazine, as well as on the SAPI web site. Watch for it!
